People love messing about with cameras. I reckon the second ever photo was some one doing something stupid (first had to be “official” and look good for prosperity). This love of messing about extends to using your iSight on your Mac. Although you can mess around with the filters and effects in PhotoBooth these do get a little boring after a while. Today I have been playing around with Fun Booth (which I am sure I have written about before, but can find no evidence of). It takes image recognition technology and allows you to play with props. Its well fun.

Don Your Party Hats

This app uses any camera connected to your Mac so you can see your lovely face. At this point you can play around. Using various props you can attach them to your face. This app is smart, using image recognition technology it will automatically attach glasses to your eyes and hats on your head etc. It is designed so you can have fun. The technology allows you to move, pull faces and the props will follow you.

There are lots of props to choose from, you can have a random combination of pretty much anything to make your video or image look fun and interesting. You can also add your own props, which allows you to make and great unique videos of yourself. As you can see above, I look quite smart with the glasses and big red nose.

This app does more than just stick funny props on your face. You can make videos and pictures and share them over the Internet using a variety of services such as email, YouTube or iPhoto. You can also connect with a buddy and play using iChat. Its great if you have kids and want to keep them entertained and have some fun.

There are a couple of downsides with this app. It soaks up CPU cycles as if they were going out of fashion. Its CPU intensive, but the app does have a lot of work to do. There is also a limited number of props included with the app, the average user may not be able to make there own high quality images that are found in the program. A larger library would be more useful. Finally I also feel that this app does have a novelty factor that would ware off pretty quickly. However, kids and even adults may enjoy this app as it takes PhotoBooth to another level.

As usual try this app out. It is fun and you should have a plau around with it. It only cost $20 and if you do decided to purchase it is not a massive investment.

I love iTunes, I never really turn it off, its on practically all the time. The one thing I find slightly annoying is the fact that you can’t really see what songs are coming next, unless you use Party Shuffle. This is where heads up ‘tunes comes into play. Its a small application which shows you which two songs are coming up next.

Heads Up

This application is simple, it comprises of a small window which floats on top (and blends in) and a dock icon which will change to your current album. It is designed to be more of functional little widget that you can use to see what tune is coming next and the one currently playing.

The app works in any play list although will show incorrect data if you have a shuffle for your iTunes library and not party shuffle, this is because the next tune is loaded once the one you are listening ends, as a result you can’t predict what is coming next.

The app doesn’t have hundreds of features but does have some nice touches. For example it will change what is being displayed as you re-size it.

Conclusion

Try this application out. Its free to download and use. There are some niggles with it, for example it slows down iTunes a little bit when you switch tunes. As well as this I would like to see a feature when you click on an upcoming item it will play that song, also the abilty to hide the dock icon, since its another icon to add to my already full dock.

I’m sorry for the lack of posts over the last couple of days. I have had a big Uni report due in and as a result I have been really busy. I wanted this week to be full of free applications and finish with a big list of free applications. That has unfortunately sufficed. If I had know I would have postponed this small feature set. Anyway today I am going to share with you one of the best apps for using Twitter, Twitterific. If you are interested you can find my Twitter feed here. It is a simple app that can be used to send and receive tweets as well as a whole load of other features.

Tweeting To The World

This program is very simple to use. It comprises of one main window. Within this all of your received tweets are displayed. Each one is a small box, with the users image the text they have sent and a couple of options relating to that user. At the very bottom of the application is the small message box that is used to write your own tweets and upload it to your account.

Using this application is very simple. You enter you text at the bottom of the window, hit return and the message is sent and uploaded to your profile. At the same time the app will load any tweets from other people. As a result you can quickly and easily stay in touch.

There is also a whole load of other features that you can use. For example each tweet displayed has a couple of options. Such as replying to tweets, sending direct messages. As well as adding tweets to favourites and finding the permalink URL. There is also the option of quickly going to someones profile if you so wish.

There are lots of features with this program. The preferences options are really detailed. For example you can set when you want tweets to be recieved, how tweets are displayed. There is lots of little functions that enable this application to be really useful. I never really go to the twitter website anymore, only if I need to check something or change some profile setting.

Conclusion

This application is great. It is simple to use, easy to set up and has a large feature set. It is free although it does display an advertisement within the tweet list every so often. I find this advert simple enough to deal with. Some of the adverts I find are actually quite interesting, you can pay a small fee to remove them from the app. The only draw back to this application is the price/advert and as a result it won’t receive a full score.

Sharing information over the web is a part of everyday life. If you have a desktop screen shot or any sort of image and you want a quick way to show people this image it can be quite hard. Skitch is a really fun application that is designed so you can quickly take photos, change them as your see fit and then share them over the Internet. Skitch is really popular app, and deservedly so. I will probably be using this application for a long time.

Lets Share Photos

Skitch is a combination of a paint application, image capture application and a image uploader application all in one. Using this application is very simple. You take your photo, this can be either from your iSight, desktop or an image on your computer. You can then re-size, change and modify this photo. The final step is to upload it to your Skitch account. The uploading method is all automatic, you don’t have to worry about making sure you upload your image correctly. Once as you have uploaded this image you can then share it with your family and friends. Its a quick way of conveying information.

Actually using this program at first is quite complicated. For example this application is not a normal app. For example it doesn’t look like a normal app, it hasn’t got any of the normal Mac features. But as you start to use the application it becomes easier to use. For example all of the drawing tools are on the left hand side. You pick the tool you want, and you can then annotate the image as you see fit. The right hand side contains a couple of tools. Such as the screenshot image, and an image from your iSight.

There is a lot of features in this app. For example you can do a lot of simple things with your image, add arrows, add text etc. But the main feature of this application is to upload it to the net. Once as you have signed up (for free) you get an account. Once as you press upload in the application it will upload your images to the Internet. You can then keep this for later or share it with your friends. For example you could take a screenshot, whack a big red arrow and circle on it highlighting an important piece of information and then upload it to the Internet so your friends can view what you were on about.

Conclusion

I like this application. It goes into the keep pile. But there are a couple of problems with this app. For example it doesn’t look like a Mac application. As a result it never feels quite right in using it. As well as this there could be more image editing features. It is supposed to be basic, but it could be more complex.

This application is free and you really should try it out. It may at some point become a paid application although I haven’t heard any news about this changing.

Polaroids are probably the only form of film cameras that are still on the market. All have been taken over by digital. Polaroids are the funky pictures you take with a thick white boarder. As a result they are fun way to take a picture and instantly see what you have taken. It has a lot of shaking involved as your picture slowly develops. This polaroid effect has been taken into the digital age with Poladriod. The results are fun and surprising really good.

Can You Take My Picture?

The idea behind this program is to get a really vintage polaroid effect. Although you can do some post-processing in Photoshop, that can take quite a long time if you don’t have the necessary skills. This program will take your image and apply some effects. These include smudge marks on the paper, actual paper textures, as well as under and overexposing your image so it looks “vintage”.

Actually using this program is really simple. You drag and drop your images onto the program. This isn’t a normal program with toolbars etc, it is a small image. Once as you drag your image a small sound will play and your small polaroid image will display on screen. It will then slowly develop from the brown background to your image. Shaking the image will help speed up the process.

From the image above, the camera is your drop box, the image on the left is a fully exposed image (which would have a small red cross in the corner if you could see it). The image on the right is an image which is half way through exposure. When the program actually finishes exposing your image you will end up with something similar to the one below. Notice the details such as scratches and white parts on the image area. These are all random on each image you do. You get a unique image every time. The image is also a very high quality, 1300px x 1600px.

You can then use these images in your Photoshop work are print them out on photographic paper for that polaroid effect without the polaroid camera.

Conclusion

For a fun way to get the polaroid effect, Poladriod is a fun program to use. There is a couple of problems with this program. First it is in French, which makes the odd menu item look a bit funny. As well as this it is slow of actually developing your image. If you want a quick way of actually getting a file image out of this program you will have to wait a couple of minutes as it develops your image. Overall it is fun to use. It is also free which is a major bonus.
