A New Design For iLoveMacApps

You may have noticed the new design here on iLoveMacApps. You don’t need to adjust your browser, I have decided to do a small re-design to bring it inline with the other website I own and run. I hope you like this new design, since I think it is easier to use. Plus it is really light on code making it blindingly fast to run and use. This post is going to be a little who’s who on the new features.

One of the reasons I re-designed this site is to make it similar in style to MacTricksAndTips. It shares the same basic code, the only difference is the colour scheme. This was done to make all of my current (and future) sites look similar, so any user can see they belong to this blog network. It also makes updating any of the back code a lot easier. The code behind the site is a lot simpler. I have removed some of the multiple loops within the site. This makes the response time of the site increase, which is always good.

I have removed the top bar, which contained quite a few navigational items, from this site. Although this was unique it wasn’t that useful and I felt that a more traditional sidebar site would be far more useful. Again, it also removes some of the large images which slow the load time of the site down.

I hope you enjoy this new design. I have been bug hunting and I think I have squished most of the bugs. If you do find one please leave a comment, I will try and remove it as soon as possible.

iLoveMacApps Dashboard Widget

If you are a follower of MacTricksAndTips, I have a small dashboard widget. This widget gives you the latest news on you dashboard. Its a new way of getting the latest apps. I also think it looks pretty cool. This post is to tell you guys that you can download this widget and use it on Dashabord.

The widget has a couple of cool features that I would like to point out. The main feed is in the top half of the widget. It is limited to the latest 5 stories to save bandwidth. Previous widgets had the latest 10 posts, but that pulled to many images and put a large bandwidth load on my server.

The second half of the widget has the latest twitter tweet from myself. You can see what I am doing at the moment. There is a slight bug in the code in that it doesn’t update as often as I liked. But it works pretty well. You can also refresh and shrink the widget. The widget is quite tall so shrink button will shrink the widget make it smaller and give you more of your desktop back.

Try it out, see what you think, tell your friends and leave a comment below. There is probably hundreds of bugs in the widget which I haven’t found but they will be fixed in future releases.

iLoveMacApps Dashboard Widget

Sorry For The Down Time

If you visited the site over the last day and night you may have noticed that it was down quite a lot. This is due to one of my other sites being dugg. As a result of some bad configuration in the Apache core it took down the site. Since this site is on the same server, iLoveMacApps got killed as well.

This was actually do the Apache not being able to serve the files quick enough, as a result it just seemed to hang and crash. It was really annoying for me personally. As I haven’t been on digg in a long time and would have liked to tested it out with this new server. Actually I did test it out and it failed miserably.

Anyway I will have to get back and do some work. This post was more of a heads up if you were trying to visit the site and you encountered problems. Please note that I want be doing a post today due to work. But i’ll do an extra one on the weekend.

If anyone has Apache tuning tips for a 512mb VPS server please email me or leave a comment. I am currently with Slicehost which are great. It was my own personal error that cocked things up.

Sorry For The Down Time

We Are Live – Welcome

Hey

This is just a hello post to everyone visting iLoveMacApps for the first time. Over the past week I have, in secret, finishing off this site. I have made sure every bit of the site works as planned. As well as this I have also been busy writing a couple of posts so you have something to look at.

Currently I have a couple of big posts planned these will slowly be appearing over the next couple of days and weeks. I will also be regulalry updating the site with new application reviews and where applicable news. I want this site to be the place for Mac applications reviews. If you want me to review and application or give a shout out to your own application please contact me.

We Are Live – Welcome

Hello everyone and welcome to iLoveMacApps.com. This site is dedicated to bringing you reviews, previews and the latest and greatest news on Apple Mac applications. I personally have been using a Mac for a long time, over the years I have developed a large collection of programs. As a result I have developed a keen interest in applications for the Mac. This site is dedicated in bring you the latest applications as well as old time goodies that have been forgotten at the back of the cupboard.

I aim to do at least one review a day. But due to time constraints, such as University and other work related adventures I may end up skipping a couple of days. I will also not post on a weekend. Simply because I want some time off. Although if I miss a day in the week for some reason, you will see a post on a Saturday or Sunday. All in all I try to do 5 posts a week.

The posts themselves will vary depending on the topic. Like I have said previously I want to do 5 application reviews a week. I will also mix in there news about new releases, big updates and other Mac App news. If you have any news or articles, as well as programs which you want to share, please send me a message with the contact form.

Features

This site also has a couple of cool features which I would like to point out. One of the coolest features I like is the scroll bar at the bottom. Although it only shows a couple of images in the screenshot below, it will eventually fill up. It is designed to show you what is on other pages without you having to scroll through hundreds of pages.

As well as this another cool feature is the A-Z list on the Categories option in the footer. You can flick through the A-Z list showing all posts from the different categories.

The final little feature that I would like to point out is the extra information box at the bottom of every post. This is designed as a quick snap shot guide of the application so you can gain a bit more information about the app without the need to read the whole post.

RSS/Twitter

One of the best way to keep up with with the site is through my RSS feed. My RSS feed will display the lastest posts from this website. You can subscribe either through the feed, so it can display in your browser, Mail or another application, or through email. Both can be accessed through the sidebar.

If you are a fan of Twitter you may be interested in following me on Twitter. Although it says MacTricksAndTip, I will post it as well. This is because I run it off my older account from my other website. As a result I am going to write to it from both, saves both time and energy.

You may also be interested in another website currently published by myself. I also run MacTricksAndTips, this site is dedicated to tips and tricks for the Mac. Although it does feature application reviews, it does mostly feature articles dedicated to getting things done on the Mac. If you want to extend your knowledge further on the Mac, that is the site to do it on.
