People have pets, I have a couple of fish and a rabbit. Keeping control of all of the information including medical bills, costs and other bits of information can be a hassle. Although you could use a spreadsheet or word document to keep control of everything having a dedicated app can take away a lot of the hassle and make keeping controls of your pet records more fun. This is where Clarus comes in. Its the one stop shop for keeping control of your pets records and its a dream to use.

Come Here Boy

This app is all about keeping your pet’s information. Is designed to be used for a variety of pets. In the image below I am going to use the default data (I don’t have any expensive pets yet), however you can customise and change the settings as much as you want. When you first load the app you are presented with the screen shot below. The app is split up into a variety of sections, Overview, Contacts, Photos, Insurance, Veterinary, Medication and Expensive, as well as this there is also a Templates section.

The overview section of the app contains a lot of information. It allows you to set a photo of your dog (which can be dragged from Finder or iPhoto), gives you information on the age of your dog, the Chip ID and various physical features. The Up & Coming section of the overview window is based on the medication section and allows you to be reminded of when treatments need to take place.

The contacts section, as you may have guessed, allows you to add a variety of contacts. These could be yourself, your vets’, your insurance providers. Although you may not need to add your own contact details (which are pulled from Address Book), they are used within other parts of the app. This app build on quite a lot of details from other sections, so for full functionality its best to add as much information as possible.

The photos section, rather simple, is used to add pictures of your pet. This can be used for various post templates etc. You don’t need to add hundreds, although it usually a very good idea to add one for the default. The photos section has a variety of functions which allows you to adjust the image size and layouts, which is quite a nice feature.

Insurance is probably quite important feature to many pet owners. The insurance section is full of small little feature to numerous to name. This section allows you to add insurance policy, attach PDF’s add claims. It clear to see how much you are spending and receiving from your insurance provider.

Since this app is used to record what has happened to your pet, you can use it to log vet visits. The veterinary section is a running log. It is clearly labled with dates, costs, notes and any medication. Its useful to work out when your pet last went to see the vet.

I mentioned in the overview section about the Up & Coming section, in the medication you add what medication you have given, the dosage and the frequency of the dosage. Its a great way of being reminded of when you need to give your pet his next shot. This app also works with iCal to make sure you don’t forget which I think is a nice touch.

The final section, which you use frequently, is the expenses section. You will no doubt be away that pets cost money. The expenses section is designed to log all of the costs involved, which is very handy. The only think it doesn’t have which I would like to see in a future version, is the ability to auto add insurance costs each month. This feature doesn’t seem to be available.

On a day to day, week to week basis you will use the features mentioned above. There is one last section which is really useful, but you will find is not as used as much. This is the templates section. This is used to auto create templates of you details. This includes expenses, facts, history’s and up and coming medications. It can also be used for creating a missing poster. I mentioned you should put a of details into each section, simply because the templates will bring all of this information together.

This application is brilliant. It includes a lot of different features, one which I haven’t mentioned is the help that is run when you first start the app. It gives you lots of different bits of information and tells you how the app works. The help guide is very useful for jumping straight into the app. When I use this app I feel that the developers have added all of the little bits that you need. They clearly have thought of something (no matter how small) and added it in. As a result it is a brilliantly designed app.

If you have a pet, download this app and try it out. It may make your life a lot easier. It can support as many pets as you have, each one is saved in a .clarus file. Its priced at £15, which is the perfect price point.

I like programs which show you how your disk is laid out. Finding which files take up the most space is usually the culprit of why your disk space if slowly disappearing. The visual apps are the best, it takes you milliseconds to work out which files are the space hogs and may need to be euthanized. I’ve reviewed GrandPerspective in the past, that was old school. Today’s app, DaisyDisk, takes file visualization and uses all of the power of Mac OS X to display your files.

Displaying Files

As mentioned this app is really visual. If you are familiar with the Sci-Fi movies when circles and disks move to visually update the information (Star Trek comes to mind). This app follows the same sort of feel. When you begin, you select the folder or disk you want to visualize. The app will then run through your disk, or access one of the many system files which stores your disk contents, and begin to display your data. The gathering of data will take a couple of minutes depending on how big your disk is, if you have lots of small files this process will take a lot longer. When its done it will have a nice growl message telling you the application is ready to be used.

Once as the app has finished you will be presented with an image similar to the one below. You can now begin navigating your file system.

Each set of folders is colour coded depending on where it belongs. System folders are in red and pink, Applications are coloured blue, User folders are in green and Documents in yellow. The colours are decided depending on the main folders on your disk and will vary depending on whats on your disk. The area of each space will signify the size of the folder or area on your disk. In the image above I have a lot of documents for myself (as you would expect) and a lot less system files.

The length of the spurs relate to the depth of a file in terms of folders. For example the blue spur on the left at the very end is 15 folders deep. The app has found that there is a lot of files and reside is a large folder. These files are quite deep in my file system and is promptly shown it on the chart. Folders are coloured where as files are in grey. It takes a while to get use to using the app and you will probably figure it by using the app rather than reading this review.

Information about each files or folder is shown in the side bar on the right. It gives a list of files and there sizes, it also colour codes them so you can quickly see what type of files they are (system, documents etc). When you click on any of the areas (except files) it will zoom in and re-render the image with that folder and sub-folders contents. Here you can move around your Mac’s file system and view the size of each file and folder in relation to each other. You can click on any area to quickly move to it. You can use the file tree at the top of the screen to quickly move back to the beginning.

Moving through your files system is very animated, every time you click on a folder it will re-draw the folder contents, but animate the size of the folders as it draws them. For example if you click on a yellow folder in the disk, it will remove every other coloured folder and re-size the pie and remove the gap. Its really fun to watch and use, due to the way the program words you will get a different image every time you use the program making each time your run the app unique and different.

You can also use Quicklook to work with the app. For example if you hover over any folder or file and press space bar, Quicklook will run and show you the file or folder in question making the app slightly more practical to use. As well as this there is also a right click menu option which can open a folder in Finder, which is a great shortcut if you want to work on a file or folder directly.

Conclusion

Overall this app is brilliant to use. It really shows off the power of the Mac operating system and should be a gloating tool for anyone using a Windows machine. It is also really good to navigate and see the size of files and folders in questions. I’ve found that the big blue spur in the image above can be deleted as it is no longer needed. It is a joy to use and I love playing with it. I personally think something like this should come built into Finder.

The only problem with this app is its price. It costs $19.95 which I personally think is a bit to much. Like most program there is a novelty factor and don’t think you would use this app constantly. However if you have a lot of hard drives and want a cool visual way to see files and folders this app may be a consideration. As this very app on this site, download it and try it out. You may enjoy using it.

A long while ago I reviewed AppZapper, its an application designed to go through your computer and help you delete applications. Normally when you delete an app it will leave behind files such a preference files etc. Although these apps are no longer used they are left on your system. As a result it can slowly increase your disk space. Its usually a good idea to get rid of them. AppZapper does cost you money, today’s app AppCleaner is a free app which does the same job.

Cleaning Those Apps

This application is very simple. You drag any application you want to get rid onto the drop box. This will activate the program and it will search your hard drive for various files such as preferences. It will then report back with all of the relevant files it has found. You can then accept the files it has found and delete them. It only takes a couple of seconds for the whole process to run and complete.

This application also sports a couple of other features to help you delete apps efficently. For example the buttons at the top of the window allows you to view all of the applications, widgets and plugins. Here you can go down the check list and mass select files to delete. This is a lot quicker than dragging apps onto the window. I use this feature to help clean my computer.

Another cool feature is the daemon that runs in the background. This checks when you delete an application and it will automatically run the app. This means when you delete an app it will automatically find all of the relevant files. Nifty. The problem with this is, however, you do have an app running in the background using memory. It doesn’t take much space however.

Overall this application is good. It does its job well, and for a free app you can’t get any better. In comparison with AppZapper it doesn’t find all of the files and folders it could, but for a slightly better job than the simple delete button its great. Try it out. I suggest you compare this app to AppZapper to see which one you like.

One of the best applications on the Mac today is Little Snitch, it is an app design to snitch on your network connections. It is really useful for seeing what programs are connecting to other computers. As a result you can see what apps are using your network, which IP address and URL they are connecting to and the amount of data they are sending.

Snitching On What Is Being Sent

This application is built up of a couple of different windows. There is no one application that runs everything, it is split into about three different windows. For example there is the rules window, the active display window, the window which shows you blocked network connections and a couple of preferences windows. All are used for blocking and allowing network connections.

The whole idea behind Little Snitch is to block apps from sending data to servers. This is really useful, since you can control what sort of information is being sent. For example if you have a program that seems to be using the network a lot you can see what it is doing. It stops apps from sending confidential data. It can even go so far as to stop attacks from programs.

Most rules are set up automatically. The first time you switch it on you will spend a little bit of time allowing or disallowing applications. You can block or allow programs, once or all time. When the snitch window comes up it shows you extra information such as the URL being accessed. A very cool little app.

Conclusion

I really like this app. It gives me a bit more control over my network that I would not normally have. Its also very good for setting up rules and making sure apps only talking to whom they are supposed to. The only problem with this application is that it does get a little naggy. Since it does pick up every network attempt, thankfully it does learn pretty quickly.

A person who contacted me asked me to review their application Sync-Mate, I was only happy to oblige. Sync-Mate is an application designed to sync files and folders from your computer on to your smart phone or pocket PC. Its a really simple application that has a lot of good little features for getting everything synced up. I don’t personally have a compatible phone but my friends has used this application and he says it works really well. My review will be from his experiences.

Lets Sync

Using the app is very simple. Once you have connected your phone to your computer you have a variety of options in the application. On the left hand side you have sync options for Bookmarks, Contacts, Folders, iCal, iPhoto, iTunes, Mail, Notes, Time, To-Dos as well as a couple of other options. There is a couple of options that are locked until you buy the full version.

Using each sub options (as outlined above) has plenty of options so you can tweak exactly how the syncing happens. For example with the iCal options you can set the syn options from Mac to Phone, or Phone to Mac or both. It also gives options so you can resolve conflicts manually or by selecting which device has priority. Each option also has similar options so you can quickly set up exactly how you want the syncing options to work.

Once as you have set everything up hit the sync button and it will work its magic. From what I have seen it works really well. My friends was quite pleased with the results.

Conclusion

If you have a smart phone or similar and you want to try out a different application Sync-Mate may be a viable option. It does has a free part of the program, although you will really need to purchase the full package to get the full benefits of the program. There isn’t really any downsides to this program. The only problem I have found is that it install code in places where you need to have a admin password, as a result it randomly restarted my computer which was a bit annoying. Other than that it works quite well.

I like programs that make my life easy. I have a really busy week as it is and I don’t want to spend ten minutes trying to find a file that I no is on my hard disk. That is why I am trying out Butler. A program recommended my by a friend who contacted me. Butler in a nutshell is a program which you can use to find a lot of programs, files and other bits on bobs on your computer and on the Internet.

Let Me Get That

Butler is really simple, it runs from the menu bar and is designed to help you find items on your Mac and on the web. The menu bar is split up into two sections. An icon fro finding all of your common places on your Mac, like volumes, recently used folders etc. The other half is a search box. Here you can set which search engines you can use to search the web. Its small light and easy to use.

But Butler can do a whole lot more for example you can control iTunes, extend your clipboard and manage a whole load of things. As well as this you can also set up hot corners, hot keys and other bits and bobs to make running Butler a lot quicker and easier.

Conclusion

I like Butler, it is vast in size and has hundreds of features. If you are going to use this application it will take you a long time to get used to all of the features that the program has. This program is free so you don’t have to pay anything. There isn’t many downsides to this program it is just how you are going to us it.

A couple of days ago I mentioned about ShoveBox, in a nutshell its an app which you can use to store all of the random bits of information you collect along the way. I mentioned about URLWell. This program is a designed to store all of those URL’s which you collect. I am talking about the ones you don’t want to bookmark but want to keep track of for later use. URLWell will git that gap.

Storing URL’s

This program is very simple. So simple it only consists of a menu bar icon and a couple of menu items. The basic idea behind this application is that you drag your URL of the website you want to save into the menu bar item. Thats it. Its really simple to use. If you want to retrieve an item you simple click then menu bar time and scroll to the URL.

There are other features to this program such as being able to show what URL’s you have visited, as well as deleteing and triming the sites you have visitied. I really like using it since I don’t have to clutter my desktop with URL shortcuts or use a bookmark folder to keep track of them all.

This program is free, try it out and see what you think. Be warned, you will tend to generate a very long list of URL’s so you will have to go through and trim it down every so often.

Sorry for the complete lack of posts. If you have been following my twitter feed, you may notice that I have a lot of work on at the moment. Anyway, this program was recommended to me after I completely forgot a great idea I had for a post. In a nutshell it a menu bar program which is designed for you to shove bits of information for reminders later. It is very useful and can store a lot of little bits. Saves you having to keep hundreds of stickies laying around. This program is called ShoveBox.

Those Little Reminders

As mentioned ShoveBox is a menu bar application, it is designed to be simple. It doesn’t have a application interface as many applications. It is just a couple of menu bar options. This doesn’t mean it is simple. It has a lot of useful features which makes using this program a lot of fun, as well as a very useful resource for storing data.

Using this app is very simple, you get your file, piece of text, iSight image, URL etc. You then drag it onto the ShoveBox icon. It will then be copied into the database, at the same time if you have Growl installed a small message will be displayed saying the data has been saved. You can then proceed to add all of the little ideas you have.

The items are then stored in a list, you can organise this list using the organisation section of the program (this is an app window). You can add folders, flags, labels and export the items. This is very useful since the menu bar section of the program only shows recent items. This can be used to store and organise more long term ideas.

This app is very useful. For a scatter mind like myself it is a good way of keeping track of information and ideas that pop into my head at random times.

Conclusion

There are a couple of problems with this program (like any program). Since it doesn’t have a dock icon you can’t Command + Tab into any of the windows. This is one of the pet peeve of mine. I like the Command + Tab functionality. The next small problem is that it takes a little bit of getting used to for shoving data into the app, but once as you start using this program you get used to it pretty quickly.

I need a couple of alarm clocks. One doesn’t cut it, I tend to hit snooze, roll over and wonder why I am going to be late. Anyway I have round a really good free applications called Alarm Clock. It is an alarm clock program with built in timer and stop watch capabilities. It is great for anything that needs to be timed, or wake you up in the morning.

Get Up, You Are Late

This program is split into three parts, although they all follow a similar theme. This program is run from the menu bar. You can pick to setup an alarm to go off a a specific time, a timer to go off in X minutes or a stop watch. Each option has a couple of customization options to increase the functionality of this program. The interface is slick and very easy to use. You can also set the alarm to run from your iTunes library, so you can play your own music in the morning.

Setting a morning alarm is very simple. From the menu bar option you select new alarm. You then pick the time and the repeat. The final step is to pick the music you want to play. Normally you can chose to pick a song from your iTunes library, although if you don’t pick any songs it will do a normal beeping noise. You can have as many alarms as you like. The app also builds in functionality such as snooze and the use of the Apple remote.

As well as an alarm you can also have timers and stop watches. These use a similar interface as the image above. They, again, are simple to use. They comprise of two buttons to control the program and a main large timer section. It is really simple to use. Its great for timing for dinner as I don’t have to rely on my memory to remember to take chips out of the oven.

Conclusion

This app is really good for a free application. I have been using it for the last couple of days. It does get me up in the morning. The only problem I have with this app is that it doesn’t have a dock item, therefore you can’t Command + Tab into the program. This is really annoying for me since I tend to switch apps frequently and this hinders what would be a great application .

This app is free but the author does accept donations. Try it out an see what you think.

As part of “free” week this week, I am finding small but useful applications which you can use on your Mac, the main criterion being they are free. Today I have found Namely. It is a very small app which you can use to search for applications you your computer. You can then load this applications. It is similar to the very popular Todos, except this application is more specific in finding the program you want.

Search and Find

Namely is a very simple app. It contains a search box, the search result and the name of the program. It is not an all singing all dancing application launcher. It is a simple app which you can use to search for programs you want and then launch them.

Using the application is very simple (you can’t make using it hard). You type in a couple of key letters from the beginning of the applications you want to use. The list will appear below and you can then click on the desired app and it will run. Very simple. As a result it is incredibly useful. You are not messing about with fancy eye candy effect that you get with Quicksilver or Todos, it is to the point.

There could be a couple of improvements. For example the hotkey to bring the application could work. It may be my computer with so many different programs running on top of each other, but when I press the key command, even after changing it to something unique it fails to appear. This is a slight problem since it reduces the usefulness of the app.

Conclusion

This app is good. It meets it purpose and needs for the end user. There are a couple of bugs but I wasn’t expecting this program to be bug free, it is free. I am only going to rate it 2 and a half stars due to the fact that this program does have a limited scope. There is only so much it can do. Awarding it any higher would not seem right.
