Doozla – Fun Drawing Game For Children

I wish I was still a child. You could play in mud all day, put custard in your hair and you were the centre of the world. If I did ever venture inside I would usually colour or build stuff. But I used crayons. With the magic of Macs you don’t need them anymore. No more sharping pencils, your pens running dry. You can do all this through the wonderful application called Doozla.

Mum, I Need More Paper

In this paper less world computers seem to be going into every aspect of your lives. You can pretty do anything you want with a computer. The natural step is to make old time past favorites available on a computer. Doozla takes one of these past times, puts it on your computer and makes it fun to play. It is designed for kids so you have to keep that in mind when you look at this product. But for any one who has children around five-ish (I don’t really know kids ages and developments) this game may be just the thing you need.

The simple idea behind this application is to take the drawing and colouring aspect of playing and put it onto your computer. In the program you have 4 main options. Colouring in, where you get a pre drawn fun shape which you can colour in. Drawing, in which you are given a blank canvas. Drawing with a background, to make things a bit more fun. Finally webcam drawing, where you can take a picture of yourself (or your child) and draw on that picture. I like the last one personally because you don’t need a bath after you have finished drawing on yourself.

This program is designed for kids. So it has big buttons, funny sounds simple commands. For example the main screen contains only four main options to chose from, there isn’t much set up. It all runs full screen (unless you set is up specifically not to). All the button on the paint screen as shown in the image above make a little noise when you play with them. As well as this there are some “adult” settings so you can lock out specific functions such as printing, quiting and accessing the preferences. The idea behind this is that you can set it up full screen, and it would be very hard for a child to get out of the program without them really trying.

Conclusion

It is designed for kids and it pulls it off very well. There are some small problems I find with this program. For example the background loop gets a bit boring and repetitive, as well as annoying. I would recommend using a stylus, since drawing with the mouse is hard.

Overall it is good, not to bad for $25 especially if you want to introduce a young child to a computer in a fun and interesting way. Your imagination is limitless with this program. It is just a drawing and colouring in program. You could easily spend hours drawing out your monsters and getting them just right. You can of course save and print anything you make.
