Calories – Food Tracking Application 1
Tool
In the age of keeping track of your diet it can be time consuming recording every meal you have. This is where a tool such as Calories comes into play. It is a very simple application which you can use to record every meals attributes so you can look back over them later. A great way of keeping track of everything you eat.
Whats For Dinner
Using Calories is very simple. There is basically three areas of the application within the one interface. There is the day interface which you use to see what you have eaten on specific days in terms of food consumption. There is a food list, which you use through the search field. There is over 6900 foods in the database with room to add more. Finally there is the overview screen which is used to see how many calories you have eaten in comparison to other days, weeks, months and years.
The interface is very easy to use. Once as you work out what everything means. Adding foods is easy, you simply search for them using the search box in the top right. A list will be displayed on the screen and then you pick the food which you have eaten. You then chose your portion size, such as grams, cups of other measure. This will then be added to the list. You then repeat with other meals and days.
At the bottom of the screen is a very clear bar showing how much, and what of, you have eaten. It is very clear to see how many calories you have eaten, the amount of fat, protein etc. You can also change the goals for how much you are eating. Say for example you have to eat 1000 calories a day for some reason, you can change this and the bars will change in comparison. So you can clearly see what you can still eat.
The graph functions on the program is also really handy. It is easy to see in comparison to other meals how much you have been eating. The colour scheme again is used through out so you can quickly see different totals. It is very easy to work out how much you can still eat, or how much you have eaten.

Since the search function isn’t perfect and doesn’t contain every food that is out there you can add your own. You can also add hundreds of different attributes that make up a food, such as vitamins etc. All this information can be displayed to you at any time. It is a really good tool to see exactly how much of one thing you are eating. Because all of the different pieces of information is shown, it will work out exactly how much Iron or Retinol or other chemicals you have taken.
Conclusion
I really like this program for some reason. It must be all the numbers and statistical data you can use for it. Did you know that two portions of Corn Flakes contains 201milligrams of Folate. If you are on a strict Folate diet it is easy to work out how much you are eating.
There are a couple of problems with this application. It is very US food based. For example it will contain a lot of foods on the American market that are not in the UK, or EU market. This may be OK for people from the USA but not for myself. As well as this it also means that the food portion amounts may contain different calories, proteins etc. EU and USA food may be different but is not reflected in this application. Finally I wish there was more foods actually in the list. Although 6900 sounds a lot, when you drill down it it, that not that many useful ones. The search function is also a bit funny and could be improved.
See what you think. This product is quite cheap at $19, so it isn’t such a burn in the wallet. But for today only you can get it for $12 from MacPromo (affiliate link).
