Witch – A Different Application Switcher

There are hundreds of different applications switchers out there. Each one has a different take on the same theme, speeding up how you change applications. Most try to be efficient and simple as possible. Although I prefer the normal Command + Tab and Exposé, Witch, might be a good application for people who want a bit extra. Witch has an advantage of showing you every single window that is open rather than just the applications.

Witch App?

This application is very simple. It comprises of a Preference Pane which controls all of the preferences the application. The second half of the application is the bit you will actually use. It comprises of a small overlay which shows you every single window and the application it belongs to.

There are hundreds of different options and preferences you change and tweak. You change the look, feel and operation of the program. There are loads of different options so you can get it just the way you want. What you actually change is how the overlay works and looks. You use the overlay the most and as a result you can change it to fit your needs.

The overlay is very simple, the left hand side is the application and the right hand side is the individual windows. You can select any one using the mouse of the keypad. Its really easy to use, you just have to remember which shortcut you have selected to show the overlay.

Conclusion

This application is useful. It’s also free which is a great bonus. However I feel that it may be surplus to requirements. For example you really don’t need it, Exposé does a perfect job by itself. As well as this it is also a little complicated to use, an introduction help would be useful.

Try the application out, see what you think it may be useful to you.

I love this program. You can even have it replace the default application switcher (command + tab) using pulltab and Application Enhancer. The only downside I have encounterd with this setup is that I lose the ability to use application switcher under the guest account.

A small point, witch version 1 was free but version 2 is not.

for starters, this app isn’t free, it’s €10.
Secondly, expose and witch work soo much differently. saying it’s a cross between to the default application switcher and expose would be closer. expose shrinks ever app window to find the one you want and witch just makes a list of them. Also Expose doesn’t help you with minimized window.

I bought Witch and installed it (before trying it out).

Bad decision. It refuses to activate. No difference before and after
installation. ManyTricks does not respond to queries for support. It’s been 10 days with no reply. Their support forum has also been offline during this period, with the message “We’re restructuring the forum and solving all issues.”

I’ve had to enter a paypal resolution dispute. I would like either my money back, or support to fix the problem. It’s a shame, ManyTricks seems like a well-run company in other respects.

I’m really disappoint that there hasn’t been any sort of update (news or software) from the company.
