Namely – Search And Find Applications 4
Utility
As part of “free” week this week, I am finding small but useful applications which you can use on your Mac, the main criterion being they are free. Today I have found Namely. It is a very small app which you can use to search for applications you your computer. You can then load this applications. It is similar to the very popular Todos, except this application is more specific in finding the program you want.
Search and Find
Namely is a very simple app. It contains a search box, the search result and the name of the program. It is not an all singing all dancing application launcher. It is a simple app which you can use to search for programs you want and then launch them.
Using the application is very simple (you can’t make using it hard). You type in a couple of key letters from the beginning of the applications you want to use. The list will appear below and you can then click on the desired app and it will run. Very simple. As a result it is incredibly useful. You are not messing about with fancy eye candy effect that you get with Quicksilver or Todos, it is to the point.
There could be a couple of improvements. For example the hotkey to bring the application could work. It may be my computer with so many different programs running on top of each other, but when I press the key command, even after changing it to something unique it fails to appear. This is a slight problem since it reduces the usefulness of the app.
Conclusion
This app is good. It meets it purpose and needs for the end user. There are a couple of bugs but I wasn’t expecting this program to be bug free, it is free. I am only going to rate it 2 and a half stars due to the fact that this program does have a limited scope. There is only so much it can do. Awarding it any higher would not seem right.

er…..clearly I’m missing the point, as I use spotlight; tap in the first few letters and then click on the app name to run it. So what does this give me that spotlight doesn’t!

This program is an easy-to-use application launcher and it’s easier to use than Spotlight if you use a hot key (and if it works). I set Namely to use Option-Q and then I type in one or two letters for my application and hit Return and the program launches. No more reaching up to the top of the screen for Spotlight and no waiting until Spotlight finds my application (Spotlight is slow on older PPC Macs with limited memory). The only problem I have with Namely is that it can’t always find applications that aren’t stored in my Applications folder or on my bootup partition. It’s hit and miss if Namely finds those apps. So, I keep a folder with my favorites in the Dock in case Namely fails at its job.
Nice website – I’ve added your feed to my Mac sites RSS folder in Safari and I’ll add the website to Stumbleupon in a few minutes.
