XBC – Have A Binary Clock On Your Mac 1
Utility
Sometimes you just have to geek out. One cool way is to have a binary clock. As part of free week (this week is all about free applications) I have found XBC (main site down at writing), it is a binary clock that is really fun to use. Once you get the hang of it is also really simple to read and understand. The great thing about XBC is that it is really small so take up a lot less room on your menu bar.
Whats The Time Mister Wolf
This application is really simple (what were you expecting). Once as you load the application you will be give a small series of dots. Each of these dots represent a binary values (not a true value mind, but one that is easy to read). Reading from left to right each column represents a number. You then use these numbers to represent a time. The image below shows the large version for clarity.
From left to right the binary click equals. One in the left most hour column then a 8 and 1, to equal . In the minutes section, the middle two columns, both values are at zero. Finally in the second columns, which are the last two, the values are 2 and 9. As a result the time from the binary click equals 19:00 and 29 seconds. It sounds hard. But once as you get used to reading the display it is just like reading a normal clock. You can, if you are really stuck, click on the image shown and it will show you the current time in text format.
There is very limited customization with this application, you can change the binary value from normal, which is shown above to true value. True value binary takes into account of 17 being one column instead of two. As well as this you can change the clock between 24 hour and 12.
Conclusion
This type of application, I find, is really fun to use. It is different, interesting and not out of the normal. It does its job really well. The image in the menu bar is a bit small but you can read it. A little bit more customization on this area would have been useful. Overall this is a good application.
